Los avellanares del Maresme con mentalidad ecológica y paisajística

Después de más de 60 años de trabajo como botánico, quiero reflexionar sobre la importancia ecológica y paisajística de los avellanos (Corylus avellana), que estudié por primera vez durante mi tesis doctoral en la década de 1940 en el Maresme (Barcelona). Estos arbustos, tradicionalmente explotados, son capaces de resistir eficazmente podas sucesivas mediante el desarrollo de un sistema de raíces muy extendido. Al mismo tiempo, estas raíces retienen el suelo y lo protegen de la erosión. Las líneas de la cresta de la morfología plana han permitido la formación de las poblaciones de avellano localizadas en las zonas más altas de la Sierra de Montnegre.

A reexamination of the hazels of El Maresme from an ecological and landscape standpoint

After more than 60 years working as botanist, I ponder the ecological and landscape importance of the hazels (Corylus avellana), which I first studied during my PhD thesis in the 1940s. These shrubs, traditionally exploited, are capable of effectively resisting successive prunings by developing a widespread root system. At the same time, these roots retain the soil and protect it from erosion. In the hazel populations located in the highest areas of the Montnegre Range, this fact has allowed for the formation of crest lines of flat morphology. Further stratigraphic and palynological studies of the soil of these populations should be undertaken in order to verify its persistence over time and with the goal of obtaining information that would allow for paleoclimatic interpretation.
